During 1969 a few members gathered together to discuss the possibility of starting a new DA to cover the Leeds postal district. A formation meeting was held, which elected a chairman and a committee and an application was made to club HQ for registration of the new DA. The first meet took place in Spofforth in April 1970. The rest, as they say, is history.
To celebrate 40 fantastic years of Leeds DA a party weekend was held at Ripon Racecourse in July 2010. There was a full programme of entertainment, including children’s party and bingo (for the not so young) during the day on Saturday. The weather was being kind and everyone was able to sit out and enjoy the evening entertainment that had been laid on by the organising committee.
Friday night saw a great band Tequila Sunrise perform two sets, with the amazingly entertaining drag act, Sushe Buffet keeping us entertained between.
Saturday night was party night, there was even a pass the parcel!! We were entertained for the evening by The Emerald Thieves who were joined by Leeds DA youth member Ashley Flanagan on his guitar for part of their set.
Framed pennons were awarded to Gerry Hawtin, member of the first committee and Rebecca James, who designed the 40th birthday meet pennon.
The weekend was rounded off nicely with a coffee morning on Sunday where everyone was treated to birthday cake which had been made and decorated by Pam Isbell. £250 was also raised over the weekend for our Chairmans Charity.
Huge thanks to everyone involved with setting up the meet and to everyone who came along to help celebrate and make the weekend such a success. Here's to the next 40 years!
